Music Magazine Review of Charlie Miller
Charlie Miller and the Soul Agents – The name without fail, turns up on The Basis gig calendar every month. Of course it’s obvious why – you’ll be hard pressed to find a band more popular than this group of extraordinarily talented musicians and clearly the locals just can’t get enough. So, with that in mind we asked John Fleming to sit down with his old friend Charlie for a chinwag and then provide you readers with a profile on the much-loved Mr Miller.
Born in Putney, London in 1960, Charlie sang in church choirs and performed in school plays. When he was 11, his father bought him a pair of drumsticks, no drums kit yet! He had to learn his craft by playing the furniture to his mother and father’s 45s (singles) i.e. The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Motown. Aged 14, he bought a drum kit for 10 quid which he played in a mates garage. It was an insurance payout from his stolen racing bike that allowed Charlie to buy his first drum kit… a Premier “Blue Sparkle”… and then he formed a 3-piece band with David Beach and Kevin Jacks, called Wildlife. As a toddler, Charlie remembers his mother playing records louder than the vacuum cleaner and dancing around the house. The biggest influence of those formative years however, was grandfather Reg Miller, who was the drummer and leader of a Big Band – the Rellim Orchestra.
Moving to Glastonbury in 1977 (his father lived there) Charlie was soon playing with local bands Sweet Things, Hot Property, and, in the 1980s, Blue Orchestra, and a collaboration through Glastonbury Town players to form Whole Soul Collection with Ernie Bell. Charlie drummed, sang and composed from the outset, but he had also learned to play guitar and piano along the way. He wrote the song ‘Children’s World’ in 1987, and recorded it onto vinyl at Beehive Studios in Middleoy (produced by Ollie Owen and Richie Brunton) having joined the charity that year. The 1990s saw the formations of The Diggers, Fat Spanner, and Hubba, all composed of local musicians. I was intrigued to hear that Charlie has also drummed with Chris Jagger and at Chris’s 60th birthday bash in the Assembly Rooms in Glastonbury, he found himself jamming with Sir Mick, no less!
Charlie, along with Liz Gilbert (who he considers to be his soul sister), Ian and Joy Miller (Charlie’s children), father and son John and Will Cartwright, Graeme Warner, Adrian Hopper, Jezz Jackson, Mark Webb, Dominic Bell and Dan Poole, provide the current line up for Charlie Miller and the Soul Agents The group are due to release a 5 Track EP of Charlie’s own compositions very soon.

The Soul Agents
The line up of the Charlie Miller and the Soul Agents includes the following band members
Adrian started playing flute in duos and trios on the burger bar and pub circuit in London.
Co-founding a travelling theatre group and playing with a loose knit busking ensemble at various green festivals eventually took him to Glastonbury festival and later to live in the area. Many and varied collaborations ensued and he was encouraged to take up saxophone.
The band that has now become The Soul Agents played a large part in developing his playing along with various short lived improvising ensembles and R&B and Ska bands that played in community buildings and pubs around the South West of England. Now concentrating souly (sic) on working with Charlie Miller and the Soul Agents and developing keyboard and theory, slowly!
Glastonbury based drummer and percussionist. An all round professional.
A solid musician with the passion and drive for success. A real pleasure to work with! What more can we say… come and see for yourself. We could go on on a bit more just to make him look cool but really that would be overkill, I mean c’mon… you must’ve heard of this guy by now anyway, he’s the real deal and he has tons of talent.
When you come and see the band play live, you will see Dan is superb on percussion or full drum kit. In addition, he is a top Sound Engineer and last but not least he is even a skilled Lighting Technician! Phew… there is so much talent in this band!
Dom is dedicated to his love of music, and you can identify that with his approach to his instrument.
Bands that Dom is involved with include:
Charlie Miller and The Soul Agents
House Of Commoners
The Mark Webb Band
…just to name a few.
Come and see this talented musician perform. If you want cool grooves to get you dancing then listen to Dom Bell on percussion, you are in for a treat!

One of the most intriguing guitarists of his generation.
Hailing from Glastonbury, Somerset, James has been playing guitar professionally since the age of 14 and has recently completed his BMus (Hons) Degree at London’s Guitar Institute.
James’ playing style encompasses solid rhythm chops as well as a soulful approach to lead playing that has been described as resembling a soul gospel singer. Despite having a firm technical command of the guitar, he much prefers to play understated and let the music speak for itself.
Since moving to London, James has been playing constantly, alongside studying, and has been fortunate enough to play with world-class musicians such as Winston Delandro (Steve Winwood, Bob Marley); Richard Bailey (Incognito, Jeff Beck); and Bristol based Alto Sax virtuoso James Morton.
Versatile Saxophonist & Keyboard Player.
Jezz collaborates with live bands, recording musicians and talented performers across the UK. He started playing piano at the age of 7 and keenly pursued his musical skills at school where he learned clarinet. Joining his first covers band at age 13 he started to play saxophone and piano to appreciative audiences. Finding pop, funk and jazz inspiring he chose to study at the Leeds College of Music. Straight out of college Jezz toured the UK with professional acts, then went for a European Tour with a famous Top Ten band known for their many hits. Jezz enjoys playing Tenor Sax in the Charlie Miller and The Soul Agents horn section plus Keyboards.
Singer, Radio Presenter, Native New Yorker.
Liz Gilbert has been singing and performing on stage since she was a child growing up in New York. Her first appearance with a band was at CBGB’s in 1984 singing with The Henry Army.
Since arriving in Glastonbury in 1987, she has enjoyed a long collaboration with Charlie Miller and has done lead and backing vocals on various recordings for bands including Chris Jagger, Bristol funksters THiNK, The Space Pirates, and Flipron.
Liz presents a radio show “The Selection Box” every Monday night on GFM. www.glastonburyfm.co.uk
Mark has been playing saxophone his whole life.
Studying under long term mentor and former James Brown musical director Pee Wee Ellis, Mark’s passion for music is evident in his playing, squeezing every ounce of expression from his horn and always playing with great feel and soul.
His time spent playing saxophone has seen him play on the same bill as artistes such as Wynton Marsalis, Beverley Knight and Andy Sheppard. A genuinely lovely man who regularly brings together some astounding musicians for a guaranteed great show.
